The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has seized a large quantity of tax-evaded illegal Kings cigarettes during a raid at Fasiatala Bazar in Kalkini upazila, Madaripur. During the operation, fines were imposed on two traders-Shahin Store’s owner was fined Tk 3,000, and Milan Store’s owner was fined Tk 2,000-amounting to a total of Tk 5,000 in cash penalties.
The raid was conducted on Thursday at around 12:30 PM by Jannatul Ferdous, the Consumer Rights Officer of Madaripur district. A team from the DNCRP carried out inspections and searches in various shops at the market.
During the operation, panic spread among the traders, and they pledged not to sell low-cost illegal cigarettes in the future.
Jannatul Ferdous, the Consumer Rights Officer of Madaripur district, stated that the raid was conducted based on information regarding the sale of illegal cigarettes in Fasiatala Bazar, Kalkini. During the operation, 20,000 sticks of counterfeit Kings cigarettes with fake banderoles were seized from several shops. As a result, two traders were fined Tk 5,000 for selling illegal cigarettes.
She further added that directives were given to the president and general secretary of the market committee to ensure that no trader sells tax-evaded illegal cigarettes in the future.
