The danger of misinterpretation
Ameer Hamzah :
On last Friday night, I was watching a television programme on ‘The Quran and Shirk’. The word ‘Shirk’ means ‘ascribing partner to Allah.’ It is a great sin and will never go unpunished (Ref:.Al-Quran, Surah An-Nisa, Verses No. 48 and 116).
I thought that we would be able to take lessons from the programme. But soon we were taken by surprise when the lone speaker of the programme said that the verses of the Quran will remain unchanged, but its literal translation and the Tafsir (explanation) would be changed with the passage of time from ages to ages.
We think that such statement is suicidal as well as controversial, and will strengthen the enemies’ hands of hate-campaign against the divine legitimacy of the Holy Quran.
Al Quran is a Book of Allah for mankind as a guidance (Ref: Al Quran, Surah Al Baqarah, Verse No. 185). It has been revealed unto the Prophet Muhammad (SM). We quote hereunder few verses for perusal of our readers.
!) Establish Namaj (Prayers) from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and (the recital of) the Quran at dawn. Surely the recital of the Quran at dawn will be ever witnessed-(Surah Bani-Israel, Verse No. 78).
2) All Praise is due to Allah Who has revealed the Scripture unto His servant (Muhammad) and has not made any crookedness in it-(Surah Qahaf, Verse No. 1).
3) And recite [O Muhammad] what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. None can change His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge-(Surah Qahaf, Verse No. 27).
4) So recite what is easy [for you] of the Quran-(Surah Al-Muzzammel, Verse No. 20).
5) We have made the Quran easy to memorize, to understand. Is there any one to memorize?-(Surah Al Qamar).
The Prophet Muhammad (SM) said, “A man without the Quran in his heart is like a house without furniture.” He again said, “The Quran enters the heart of the man as much as it (his heart) is pure.”
Hazrat Ali (RA) said, “If you load the backs of even 70 camels with the mysteries of the Quran, there will be no end of mystery.”
We hope that the Islami programme organizers on the television channels will be careful about selection of topics as well as moderators and the speakers.
