BGB allowed to procure sound grenades, tear gas

The government has approved the procurement of sound grenades and tear gas canisters for the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), aligning with the practices of India’s Border Security Force (BSF), according to Home Affairs Adviser retired Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
“We have already given the nod to purchase sound grenades and tear shells for the BGB,” Chowdhury stated during a press briefing following a meeting on law and order at the Secretariat.
When asked about a potential Indian reaction, Chowdhury assured reporters that there was no reason for India to perceive the decision negatively, as the BSF already employs similar non-lethal weaponry along the borders shared with Bangladesh.Chowdhury highlighted that the BGB is currently equipped with lethal weaponry, which can be used if situations demand.
Regarding the use of the newly procured sound grenades and tear gas, he questioned why BGB would refrain from deploying these tools when necessary.
The adviser also described the border situation as stable, dismissing concerns about significant issues.
“There is no big problem on the border,” he said in response to inquiries about the current state of affairs.Experts explain that sound grenades, also known as stun grenades or sound bombs, are non-lethal devices designed to disorient targets with loud explosions.
Tear gas, on the other hand, causes eye irritation, burning sensations, blurred vision, and breathing difficulties, making it an effective crowd control measure.
This decision reflects the government’s aim to bolster the BGB’s operational capabilities while maintaining stability along the country’s borders.
