Focus on peaceful Rohingyas resolution

Staff Reporter :
High Representative to the Chief Adviser on the Rohingya crisis and priority issues, Dr Khalilur Rahman, has called on the Rohingyas to avoid violence and illegal activities while directing their energy towards peaceful and constructive efforts to resolve their crisis.
During his visit to the refugee camps in Ukhiya, Dr Rahman engaged with a diverse group of forcibly displaced Rohingyas, encouraging them to unify their voices in preparation for the upcoming International Conference on the Rohingyas.
The conference, proposed by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024, aims to foster a unified approach to ensure the sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that a “unified position” among the Rohingyas will significantly influence the conference’s outcome, paving the way for a timely and action-oriented resolution. The event is expected to set a strong foundation for addressing the Rohingya crisis comprehensively.
UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka, Gwyn Lewis, assured the meeting participants of the full support of the UN system’s top leadership in assisting the efforts led by the Chief Adviser and Dr Rahman.
The Rohingya representatives pledged to work towards forming a common platform to define their shared goals and expressed their profound gratitude to the people of Bangladesh for their hospitality.
They also extended special thanks to Professor Yunus for advocating for their cause on the global stage. Dr Rahman also held discussions with the UN humanitarian assistance team operating in the camps to address shared concerns and align efforts for better coordination.
Bangladesh currently hosts over 1.3 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported a tragic incident where a child was killed, and 100 houses were gutted in a recent fire at a Rohingya camp, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions to the crisis.
