construction delays: JnU students end hunger strike after 35hrs

JnU Correspondent :

Jagannath University (JnU) students withdrew their hunger strike on Monday evening after 35 hours upon receiving a written commitment from the Ministry of Education that their demands will be addressed.

At about 7pm, AKM Rakib, a student from the Department of Botany, announced the withdrawal of the hunger strike at a press conference.

Earlier, students of Jagannath University (JnU) have launched a mass hunger strike, demanding the transfer of the university’s second campus construction project to the military, the establishment of temporary housing, and housing allowances until permanent accommodations are ensured.

On Monday, January 13, the protest entered its second day, with students locking the university’s main gate and continuing their strike, which began at 8:30 AM on Sunday.

Despite assurances from the Vice-Chancellor, students remain resolute, and around 15 participants have been hospitalized due to illness.

The prolonged delay and allegations of corruption surrounding the Keraniganj second campus project, stalled for over six years, have sparked widespread discontent. In response, 13 students initiated the hunger strike, presenting three core demands.
