Diamond Chowdhury, Managing Director of Diamond Chowdhury Developments Ltd. (DCDL), is a name synonymous with innovation and resilience. As the first female entrepreneur in Bangladesh’s electrical industry, she has not only shattered glass ceilings but also built a legacy from scratch. Her inspiring journey from textiles to becoming a leading figure in LED lighting exemplifies the indomitable spirit of women in business.
In an exclusive interview with The New Nation, Diamond shared insights into her remarkable career, which spans over three decades. From her initial success in the textile sector with the Sohani brand saree to her pivotal role as Director at Heavens Group, Diamond has consistently showcased her entrepreneurial acumen. At Heavens Group, she was instrumental in driving the Energy Plus brand’s growth, culminating in its readiness for export with support from the World Bank.
Her current endeavour, DCDL, is gaining traction with its flagship brand, Aurora Lights. The company manufactures LED bulbs, panels, floodlights, and streetlights while also venturing into solar-powered street panels. Under her leadership, DCDL has partnered with renowned global companies, including Unilamp Thailand, Solar Nation China, and Bega Germany, to bring cutting-edge lighting solutions to Bangladesh.
Reflecting on her vision for Aurora Lights, Diamond said:
“Our focus is on the corporate market, specialising in outdoor façade lighting, landscaping, and street lighting. With the right government support, we can produce high-quality lighting at a fraction of the cost of imports, reducing dependency on foreign solutions.”
Her aspirations extend beyond domestic markets as Aurora Lights prepares to expand globally:
“We are now ready to export Aurora Lights and contribute to earning foreign currency while fostering a more self-sufficient future for our nation.”
Diamond Chowdhury’s journey has been marked by challenges, particularly as a woman navigating the male-dominated electrical sector. Yet, she has turned these obstacles into opportunities, proving that perseverance and vision can overcome any hurdle. Despite limited financial support from the banking sector, she has propelled her ventures to success, advocating for greater institutional support for female entrepreneurs:
“Entrepreneurs like us face challenges in the root phase due to a lack of curiosity and support from commercial industries. The banking sector must step up to create opportunities for women to grow and contribute to the economy.”
Diamond also emphasised the untapped potential of industries beyond ready-made garments and manpower exports:
“Bangladesh has a wealth of industries that remain unexplored. Diversifying our export basket could significantly strengthen our economy and ensure sustainable growth.”
As a dedicated mother of two, Diamond balances her corporate responsibilities with family values, embodying the essence of a well-rounded leader. Her commitment to corporate social responsibility underscores her belief in giving back to society and inspiring others to dream big.
Diamond Chowdhury’s journey is not just a story of entrepreneurial success but also a testament to the power of determination, innovation, and resilience. Her leadership in DCDL and Aurora Lights is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for Bangladesh’s industrial landscape.
