Election plans to align with reform goals: CA
Staff Reporter :
Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus reiterated the importance of essential reforms before the national election and hinted at an announcement regarding the reform and election process to be made later this month.
The Chief Adviser outlined how the interim government plans to proceed and meet public expectations in alignment with the vision of a new Bangladesh.
During an interactive session with European envoys at the Chief Adviser’s Office on Monday, Prof Yunus referred to the Election Reform Commission, emphasising the necessity of implementing key reforms before the election to avoid recurring issues. Dr Yunus stated that the government would await the commission’s report to incorporate its proposals into the election process. “If the government holds the election now, it will be an outdated process, and all the previous problems will resurface,” he explained.
He underlined the interim government’s commitment to creating a new Bangladesh through fresh policies and an updated institutional framework, adding that political parties were keen to hold elections. “We are also eager to hold the election,” he affirmed.
Addressing the diplomats, Dr Yunus outlined the government’s dual responsibilities: conducting elections and implementing reforms across various sectors. He noted that 15 different commissions were expected to submit their reports between the end of this month and mid-January.
“We will be ready for the election once the reform processes are complete,” he said, emphasising that both reforms and election preparations were advancing simultaneously towards the government’s goals.
Prof Yunus described this period as an exciting moment for Bangladesh, highlighting its significance as the month of Victory. “This is a very special occasion to have you all together,” he said, acknowledging the political, economic, and moral support extended to Bangladesh.
He also pointed out the strong sense of unity prevailing in the country, despite misinformation and propaganda campaigns.
Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain was also present at the session, which was attended by ambassadors and representatives from various European nations, including Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and others, alongside EU mission delegates based in New Delhi.
