A non-governmental organisation campaigned in Rangpur demanding cancellation of the suspended LNG project. A different kind of protest campaign was held in front of the Agriculture Institute in Rangpur on Thursday afternoon.
DOPS Coordinator Pranab Kumar, women leader Lipika Begum, focal of Ward No. 28 ReziaParvin, Subal Mukherjee, university student AfzalHossain, etc. spoke at the event.
All unnecessary LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals and LNG-based power plants approved under the Special Act on Rapid Supply of Electricity and Energy, but suspended by the current interim government, have been permanently canceled.
The innovative campaign, jointly organized by the local DOPS, the Coastal Living and Environment Action Coalition (CLEAN) and the Bangladesh Environment and Development Action Coalition, and attended by local residents, other environmental organizations, and civil rights activists, called for a permanent halt to these harmful projects undertaken by the previous government.
DOPS Coordinator Pranab Kumar said, “The keynote speakers said that LNG terminals and power plants will create a long-term environmental and financial burden for Bangladesh, which is dependent on natural resources. These projects, approved using special laws, have been expedited without any kind of environmental assessment, which is a violation of people’s rights and international standards.
