The Judiciary Reforms Commission will consult additional stakeholders prior to formulating policies concerning the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court.

“We are in the process of developing policies for appointing judges to the Supreme Court. However, no final decision has been reached at this stage.

We will engage with more stakeholders to gather their insights in this regard,” stated Chief of the Judiciary Reform Commission, retired Justice Shah Abu Naeem Mominur Rahman.

The commission’s chief addressed journalists following a meeting at the Judicial Administration Training Institute.

Justice Shah Abu Naeem also urged media outlets to refrain from disseminating incorrect information about the commission, remarking, “We have observed that one or two media organizations are publishing inaccurate news regarding our activities, which leads to confusion. We trust that the media will exercise caution in this regard.”

During the meeting, commission members included retired High Court Division judge Emdadul Haque, Justice Farid Ahmed Shibli, former district and sessions judges Syed Aminul Islam and Masdar Hossain, senior Supreme Court attorney Tanim Hussain Shawon, and Kazi Mahfuzaul Haque Supan, associate professor at the Dhaka University law department.

The Chief of the Judiciary Reform Commission indicated that discussions will take place with representatives from various professions. As part of this initiative, the commission has already held discussions with legal leaders.

On Thursday, the Reform Commission conducted a view-exchange meeting with leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association, where the attorneys emphasized the need for a clear policy regarding the appointment of judges to the High Court.

On October 3, the government established the eight-member commission to propose necessary reforms aimed at ensuring the independence, impartiality, and effectiveness of the judiciary.
