The joint forces led by the Bangladesh Army arrested 45 suspected muggers, extortionists, and teen gang members from the Mohammadpur area on Saturday night.
The joint operations took place in Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan, and Naboday Housing areas.
However, residents of the capital’s Mohammadpur area reported that these operations had brought much-needed relief to the community.
“Among those detained, approximately 15 to 16 are identified as teen gang leaders involved in extortion, mugging, drug dealing, and various other crimes.
This operation will continue to ensure the safety of residents,” said a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) on Sunday.
The raids were conducted in response to an increase in mugging and criminal activities in these neighborhoods, bringing a sense of relief to the local community.
Since being granted magistracy powers, the army has detained 197 individuals and confiscated 18 firearms, 261 rounds of ammunition, 19 types of drugs, a grenade, and 80 locally-made weapons.
A city resident reluctant to be named urged the interim government to continue these drives considering the betterment of the inhabitants.
Recently, CCTV footage of multiple mugging and robbery incidents in Mohammadpur circulated widely on social media. In one video, a young woman on her way to university is seen being chased and robbed of her bag by armed assailants around 6:30 a.m. on October 23.
Another video captures a gang of robbers wielding weapons as they raid a mini-supermarket in Basila, holding the shopkeeper at gunpoint and seizing cash, occurring at approximately 10 p.m. on October 25.
A third video shows a large group of teenagers displaying weapons in Dhaka Uddan around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, intimidating passersby; all identified were members of local teen gangs.
To maintain law and order, temporary army camps will be established in each housing area of Mohammadpur, where army personnel will be stationed around the clock. Major Nazim Ahmed, Deputy Commander of the 23 East Bengal Regiment, confirmed this development in a press conference on Saturday, October 26.
