Journo hacked to death in Mymensingh

A local journalist has been hacked to death in front of his house in the Sadar upazila of Mymensingh. The incident took place in the Tanpara area of Majhipara in Shambhuganj upazila around 11:00 am on Saturday.

The victim has been identified as Swapan Bhadra, 55, son of Jagesh Chandra Bhadra. He was a former vice president of the Tarakanda Press Club. He was actively involved with both local and national newspapers.

Safiqul Islam Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed the matter to the media saying that Swapan was against terrorism and drug trafficking in the area. He had a long-standing dispute with a local alleged drug dealer named Sagar.

Sagar attacked Swapan with a knife at around 11AM on Saturday while he was reading a newspaper outside his home and left the place leaving Swapan critically injured.

Locals took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. The OC said they are continuing to drive to nab the accused.

Family members of the deceased allege that Swapan was murdered in connection to his writings.
About a year ago, there had also been another attack on him. Based on their accusation, the police have detained a youth named Sagar Mia, 18, in the afternoon on Saturday. Sagar is the son of Babul Mia from Majhipara village in the upazila.

Superintendent of police in Mymensingh Azizul Islam visited the scene of the incident yesterday afternoon. He said the detainee Sagar is a vagabond and criminal. It could be confirmed that he is the killer, he added.
