Dengue: 9 more die, highest reported in a single day this year

Nine more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Saturday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 210 this year.
It’s only the second time that more than 200 people have died from dengue in a single year in Bangladesh, although the total still trails some way behind last year’s 1705, reports UNB.
Also reported on Saturday, 915 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever in the preceding 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of them, 175 dengue patients were admitted in hospital under Dhaka North City Corporation while 156 were hospitalized in Dhaka South City Corporation. The rest, 584, were outside the capital.
Some 3,651 patients are receiving treatment in different hospitals across the country.
A total of 41,810 dengue cases have been reported since January 1, 2024.
Last year, 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record, with 321,179 cases recorded.
On Friday, the death toll for dengue crossed the 200-mark.
With the new counts, the number of hospitalised dengue patients has reached 41,810 this year. A total of 210 people died among them.
As many as 3,651 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. They include 1,849 in the capital and 1,802 outside Dhaka.
The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.
Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023.
The highest 1,705 people also died of the disease that year. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), with the new deaths and cases, the total number of deaths rose to 210 while total number of cases rose to 41,810, of which 23,851 are from outside Dhaka.
Currently, 3,651 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in different hospitals across the country.
A total of 37,949 dengue patients have been released from the hospitals till Saturday this year.
