New IGP urges cops to return to work

Staff Reporter :

M Mainul Islam, the newly-appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh, has expressed regret over the role of the police during the recent anti-discrimination student protests.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday (August 7) at police headquarters, IGP Islam committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the incidents involving students, ordinary citizens, and police officers affected by the clashes and violence.

Addressing the press for the first time since assuming his position, IGP Islam outlined several immediate directives for the police force. He has instructed all police personnel to return to their respective stations, police lines, and barracks by the evening of August 8.

“Metropolitan police commissioners and district superintendents of police will establish Citizen Security Committees,” he said. “These committees will include senior citizens, professionals, student representatives, political and media personalities, and will be responsible for providing emergency security to police stations and their surrounding areas. The final framework of these committees will be outlined shortly.”

To maintain discipline within the police force, IGP Islam also directed his colleagues to avoid making any statements or comments via social media. He highlighted the issue of unprofessional conduct by some officers, which he said had led to numerous injuries, deaths, and human rights violations.

“Many of our officers have been harmed due to the actions of a few unprofessional individuals who disregarded human life and violated rights,” IGP Islam noted. “At this critical juncture, I urge all policemen to dedicate themselves to their duties as law enforcement officials, and we will implement measures to enhance your quality of life and overall welfare.”

The IGP also sought the cooperation of all citizens in fulfilling his professional duties, expressing hope that, through collective effort, Bangladesh would progress towards becoming a more prosperous, peaceful, and safe nation. “With everyone’s combined efforts, we will build a happy and secure Bangladesh, Inshallah,” he stated.
In his address, IGP Islam expressed special thanks to the leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the armed forces, political leaders, media, civil society, and all respected citizens for their role in steering the country towards a new chapter.
