BNP grassroots demand dedicated leadership for strong movement

Staff Reporter :

In a strategic move aimed at fortifying its ranks to tackle future challenges, the main opposition political party- BNP has recently reshuffled several key positions within its central executive committee, partial committees for four major cities, and the Jubo Dal central committee.

Party high-commands have highlighted that this selection process has favoured individuals who have risen through their strong role in the previous movements and the ranks of the Chhatra Dal, showcasing significant sacrifice and organizational ability.

This emphasis on nurturing grassroots leaders marks a departure from past practices where established heavyweights dominated the scene. Many such heavyweights have been excluded this time, attributed to their perceived failures in previous movements.

Nevertheless, several of these seasoned leaders are being re-evaluated and assigned crucial roles within the BNP central executive committee, emphasizing the importance of their experience and dedication.

Continuing this trend, the BNP is gearing up for a major reshuffle in the central executive committee for the second time soon. Notably, a change is expected for the Divisional Organisational Secretary of Chattogram, with former MP Wadud Bhuiyan emerging as the most discussed candidate for this influential post.

Bhuiyan, a two-time elected MP from Khagrachhari Hill District, has held notable positions such as Chairman of the Hill Tracts Development Board, Assistant Secretary for Employment Affairs of the BNP Central Executive Committee, and President of Khagrachhari District BNP.

Conversations with several BNP policymakers reveal that Wadud Bhuiyan began his political journey in 1980 by joining the Nationalist Chhatra Dal under the guidance of former President Ziaur Rahman.

Reflecting on his potential new role, Wadud Bhuiyan expressed his gratitude and commitment to “The party and the Zia family” for giving me a lot. If given the opportunity, I want to give back to the party.”

Besides, Abu Naser Muhammad Rahmatullah currently BNP Central Executive Committee Member also anticipated to be included in the reshuffling committee in an important post.

Abu Naser Muhammad Rahmatullah is an influential leader who served long in the party and has charismatic capability to lead street movement.

A senior BNP policymaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasised the grassroots demand for a former MP or minister from Greater Chattogram to be appointed to this pivotal role. “In this difficult time for the party, appointing someone like Wadud Bhuiyan could bring significant benefits to the BNP,” the policymaker stated.
