The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of the police has apprehended a leader of the banned militant group Ansar al Islam, who had evaded arrest during a raid on a militant hideout in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila on July 2nd.
Javed, also known as Abir or Enamul, was arrested by an ATU team from Tongi area in Gazipur on Tuesday night. At a press briefing held at the ATU Headquarters on Wednesday, ATU Superintendent of Police (Operation) Md Sanwar Hossain stated, “The arrested individual, Jabed Hossain, received training at an Ansar Al Islam facility in Netrokona with the assistance of fugitive accomplices. During his training, he acquired expertise in bomb-making. Subsequently, he began producing explosives
in a rented house in Rupganj, aiming to destabilize the country’s law and order and instill fear among the populace.”
Hossain further disclosed, “On June 9th, the ATU discovered a training center belonging to Ansar Al Islam in Basapura village, Kailati Union, Netrokona. During the raid, law enforcement seized firearms, magazines, ammunition, walkie-talkies, handcuffs, laptops, mobile phones, and various materials used for extremist training.”
“Earlier, on June 30th, the ATU arrested Parveen Akhter, the women’s coordinator of the training center, from Cox’s Bazar Sadar area. Based on information obtained from Parveen, the ATU conducted a subsequent raid in Narayanganj, where they seized three improvised explosive devices (IEDs), bomb-making materials, daggers, machetes, diaries, mobile phones, and SIM cards.”
Hossain added that Javed had rented the Narayanganj hideout, which was occasionally used by other members of the organization for organizational activities and secret meetings.
He also mentioned that other suspects had fled just before the July 2nd raid at the Borpa area in Narayanganj, where three powerful bombs were recovered by the police.
