According to a statement from the Embassy of the United States of America in Dhaka on Wednesday, a record-breaking 13,563 Bangladeshi students were enrolled in American universities in 2023.
This data was revealed during a pre-departure orientation session organized by the US embassy’s Education USA team at the EMK Center in Dhaka, aimed at students preparing to begin their studies in the USA for the Fall 2024 semester.
Stephen Ibelli, the US embassy’s public affairs counselor, commended the Bangladeshi students embarking on their higher education journey in the USA, noting their significant contribution to enriching US campuses and fostering strong people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and the USA.
He highlighted that Bangladesh ranked as the 13th highest sending country of international students to the USA, with a notable 28 percent increase from the previous year.
Ibelli encouraged students to capitalize on the resources available at US institutions for academic, professional, and personal growth.
The event featured distinguished speakers, including representatives from the US embassy’s consular section, Education USA, US university international admissions officials, current students, and recent alumni.
They provided practical advice and insights into the academic, cultural, and lifestyle differences students may encounter while studying in the USA.
Over the past decade, the number of Bangladeshi students in the United States has surged by over 300 percent , from 3,314 in 2011-2012 to 13,563 in 2022-2023, underscoring robust educational ties and high demand for US degrees.
Bangladesh ranks as the seventh largest source of graduate students in the USA, with nearly 10,000 graduate students and approximately 2,500 undergraduate students.
Education USA offers advising services and reference materials at various locations across Bangladesh, including the American Center at the US embassy in Baridhara, the Edward M Kennedy Center for Public Service and the Arts in Gulshan, and American Corners in Chottogram, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rajshahi.
