DMP initiates probe into constable’s murder
Staff Reporter :
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken swift action in response to the tragic shooting incident that occurred in front of the Palestinian embassy in the Baridhara diplomatic zone on Saturday night.
A three-member inquiry committee, led by the Deputy Commissioner of the Gulshan Division, has been established to investigate the incident, where a police constable fatally shot his colleague.
The committee has been tasked with uncovering the underlying reasons behind the shooting, aiming to provide clarity and accountability in the aftermath of the tragedy. Kh Mahid Uddin, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of the DMP, confirmed the formation of the inquiry committee, highlighting that official actions will be taken based on its findings.
The incident unfolded on Saturday night when constable Kawsar Ahmed shot his colleague, Monirul Islam, following a heated altercation while they were on duty near the Palestine embassy.
Kawsar Ahmed succumbed to his injuries at the scene, prompting senior police officials to swiftly respond and secure the area.
A case was subsequently filed with the Gulshan Police Station, and Kawsar was remanded into police custody for seven days by a Dhaka court. Initial investigations suggest that Kawsar may have been suffering from mental health issues, raising questions about his state of mind during the altercation.
Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, accompanied by senior police officials, promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and oversee the investigation.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic scene, with Kawsar allegedly claiming that his victim was merely “pretending” after the shooting.
The security personnel eventually apprehended Kawsar, who had moved to a nearby road following the incident. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots during the altercation.
