ALCWC meeting to focus on UZ polls

Staff Reporter :
The Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC), the party’s highest policy-making body, is scheduled to convene today (Tuesday) evening at Ganabhaban, chaired by Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

The primary agenda of the meeting will be to address concerns surrounding the upcoming Upazila elections.

Informed sources have indicated that a key topic of discussion will be the issue of relatives of ministers and lawmakers abstaining from voting in the Upazila elections.

The party’s policy-making committee has compiled a list categorising those relatives who have refrained from voting until the end of the electoral process.

Numerous allegations and pieces of information regarding this matter have surfaced at the grassroots level and have been reported to the central office of the Awami League.

This compiled list will be presented during Tuesday’s meeting, with subsequent deliberations aimed at determining potential punitive measures.

According to party sources, approximately 50 relatives of ministers and lawmakers participated as candidates in the initial round of elections. Additionally, a considerable number of relatives were involved in the subsequent rounds of voting.

Reports from various divisions will be presented by the organisers, and discussions will ensue on this issue. It has been noted that some relatives accused of refraining from voting hold positions within the central committee, raising questions about their alignment with party directives.

The Awami League had previously instructed its members to refrain from voting by April 18. However, only three members complied with this directive by the deadline for the withdrawal of nomination papers.

The remaining members, including children, siblings, and in-laws of ministers and lawmakers, remained actively engaged in the electoral process.
