64 BNP leaders served show cause notices for vying UZ polls

The BNP has taken action against 64 party leaders for defying the party’s decision to boycott the first phase of the upazila polls.

Among these leaders, 24 were contesting for the position of upazila chairman, 21 for vice-chairman, and 19 for female vice-chairman. Party senior leaders have stated that those who fail to provide satisfactory explanations or do not respond will face expulsion from all positions within the party, including primary membership.

An assistant office secretary of the BNP, speaking anonymously, disclosed that as of Tuesday night, 64 BNP leaders had received show cause notices, requiring them to respond within 48 hours at the party’s Naya Paltan central office.

The BNP’s high command had previously decided not to participate in any elections held under the current government and the Election Commission. Consequently, the party has expelled five leaders for violating this decision by participating in upcoming elections to municipalities and union parishads.

According to a party press release, Fahmid Faysal Chowdhury, president of the Jaladaka Upazila unit in Nilphamari district, was removed from the party for participating in municipality polls. Additionally, Sadek Ali, Vice President of Biroil Upazila in Dinajpur district, Rashed Ali Mahmud, Assistant Convener of Chiknandi Union in North Chittagong district, Johurul Alam, a member from Cox’s Bazar district BNP, and M Hannan Miah, leader of Matshajibi Dal in Cox’s Bazar district, were expelled for participating in union parishad polls.
