DSCC knocks down makeshift Bangabazar stores
City Desk :
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is conducting an eviction drive for a second day and dismantling temporary shops at Bangabazar to make way for the construction of new multi-storey buildings there.
The city corporation started its activities at 9am on Tuesday, report media.
During this time, several business owners were seen recording the eviction operation on their mobile phones. However, no one was willing to comment on the matter.
Various city corporation officers and employees were present to oversee the matter.
The eviction of temporary shops in Bangabazar began on Monday afternoon, initiated by the DSCC’s property department.
On April 4, 2023, a devastating fire completely destroyed Bangabazar, the capital’s oldest and most popular wholesale cloth market.
The investigation report revealed that 3,845 businessmen were affected, with the financial damage amounting to approximately Tk303 crore.
Since then, affected businessmen have been operating their businesses somehow by setting up tents and small stalls in the empty market space.
Following the fire, the DSCC initiated efforts to modernize and create a business-friendly environment at Bangabazar.
Plans are underway for a modern building spanning 1.79 acres with 10 floors at the site, renaming it to Bangabazar Wholesale City Shopping Complex.
According to the plan, the building will consist of a ground floor and basement, plus a total of eight additional floors, housing 3,042 shops, each measuring 80-100 square feet.
The building will feature eight elevators, four of which will be for customers and sellers and the other four for cargo lifts to facilitate the movement of goods.
Additionally, there will be parking facilities, food shops, an association office, security personnel, and accommodation for the workers.
The construction of the building is estimated to cost Tk338 crore.
