1st resistance outside Dhaka in Liberation War today

Freedom fighters made the first resistance against the occupation forces of Pakistan outside Dhaka on 3rd April, 1971 at Gogan-Satiychara along the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur, Tangail. A total of 29 EPR soldiers and 151 Bengalis were martyred in this resistance war. Even after the 54 years of the country’s independence, the barren ground and mass graves of the martyrs have not been preserved in Gogan-Satiachra, the place of the first resistance war outside Dhaka.
On April 2nd, the freedom-loving people came to know that the Pak army was coming towards Tangail with a convoy through this road. As soon as the army arrived Gogan-Satiachra, the attack started from four directions. Pak army attacked with helicopters, killed freedom fighters, EPR and men and women and burnt hundreds of houses. Among the martyrs were Subedar Abdul Aziz, Habildar Abdul Khalek, Habildar Khalilur, Abdul Gafur, Maqbul Hossain, 29 EPRs and 151 martyrs, including Jumarat Ali, organizing secretary of the Chhatra League of Kortia Government Sa’adat University College Branch.
Meanwhile, at the site of the first resistance war in Mirzapur, the boundary has not been marked and constructed even after 54 years of conservation and mass graves. Recently, Tangail Zilla Parishad constructed a freedom fighter complex and erected only a memorial plaque listing the names of the martyrs. 3rd April 1971 First War of Independence Gogan-Satiachra Commemoration Sangsad and locals hold various programs to commemorate the day every year.
In this regard, Zamurki Union Chairman D A Matin, Smriti Sangsad President Golam Naozab Pawar Chowdhury said that the families of the martyrs have strongly demanded for the preservation of mass graves and the construction of boundaries around the site of the first resistance war at Gogan-Satiachura, adjacent to the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the capital city of Dhaka.
In this regard, Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Nurul Alam said, in consultation with local parliamentarians, upazila parishad chairman vice chairman and senior authorities, initiatives will be taken to mark the graves and barracks of the martyrs in the Gogan-Satiachra area of Mirzapur upazila and build a boundary around them along with preservation.
