Quader warns against militancy at BUET
Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) should not be a breeding ground for militancy under the disguise of banning student politics.
Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader came up with the statement while addressing a view exchange meeting with party leaders of Chattogram division at the party’s Tejgaon office in the capital on Sunday.
Quader’s statements came in the wake of ongoing investigations into incidents at BUET.
He asserted the government’s determination to take action against any attempts to transform educational institutions into platforms for militant ideologies.
“BUET is being turned into a factory of militancy and dirty politics under the guise of banning student politics,” Quader remarked during the meeting.
He stressed that if such allegations hold true, the government would be compelled to intervene.
The AL leader reiterated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s policy of ‘zero tolerance’ against irregularities, injustice, and corruption.
Quader highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring justice, referring to recent high-profile cases such as the Abrar murder case and the verdict on the Biswajit killing. Responding to concerns about the upcoming upazila parish elections, Quader assured that the government is committed to conducting the polls in a free and fair manner.
He further emphasised that the administration would refrain from interfering in the electoral process and urged all stakeholders to avoid misuse of power.
Regarding the recent activities of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Quader criticised their rhetoric, likening it to past regimes.
He accused BNP leaders of propagating falsehoods about the country’s reserves and engaging in anti-India campaigns.
Quader also addressed internal matters within the AL, warning against irresponsible comments by party members and affirming that disciplinary action would be taken as per the party’s constitution.
In conclusion, Quader announced plans for the formation of the AL Chattogram city unit committee after a conference, underscoring the party’s organisational efforts.
As the government and political parties navigate various challenges, Quader’s remarks shed light on the importance of upholding democratic principles while safeguarding against threats to national security and stability.
The issue of maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and preventing extremism remains a critical concern for policymakers and stakeholders alike.
AL Praesidium Member Engineer Mosharraf Hossain chaired the meeting, while Praesidium Member Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Bir Bikram, Joint General Secretary and Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, joint general secretaries Mahabubul Alam Hanif and Dr Dipu Moni, Organising Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, Information and Research Secretary Dr Selim Mahmud, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Aminul Islam Amin, Agriculture Secretary Faridunnahar Laily, Treasurer Wasika Ayesha Khan, and Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan, among others, were present.
