Staff Reporter :
The Health Services Division under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday suspended the teacher of the community medicine department of Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital in Sirajganj Dr Md Raihan Shareef in connection with shooting at a student of the college.
An office order regarding temporary suspension signed by the ministry’s administration wing Deputy Secretary Dur-Re-Shahwas said this on Wednesday.
According to the office order, Raihan Sharif has been suspended as he has been arrested by the law enforcement on charges of a criminal offence.
However, as per the rules, the lecturer will continue to get his subsistence allowance during the term of the suspension.
Earlier on Monday, a committee, headed by the Medical Education wing Additional Director General (admin) Professor Bayezid Khurshid, was formed to investigate the incident.
A student named Arafat Amin Tomal – a third-year student of the college’s MBBS programme – was shot in the leg as Sharif was showing off a pistol during an oral exam on Monday.
Afterwards, students detained the lecturer and launched a protest, stirring tensions on campus.
After receiving a report on the incident, police went to the scene, took Sharif into custody and seized his pistol. The Detective Branch (DB) of police later recovered several other weapons, including a foreign pistol and ammunition, from Sharif’s possession.
It was later learned that the pistol is illegal. A lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine, Sharif is the son of former Sirajganj Government College Professor Abdur Razzak and lived in the town’s Dattabari Moholla.
Arafat Amin’s father filed a case in connection with the incident. Another case was filed by Sirajganj DB police sub-inspector Abdul Wadud against the teacher under the arms control act.
