Body floating on Naf River recovered

Staff Reporter :
Border tensions persist in the areas of Naikhongchhari Ghumdhum and Tumbru in Bandarban amidst ongoing fierce clashes between the military junta’s armed forces and insurgent groups within Myanmar, continuing unabated for two weeks.

The local populace residing along the Bangladesh-Myanmar frontier remains engulfed in fear, as the unpredictable trajectory of bullets and mortar shells poses a constant threat to their safety.

In a related development, police discovered the body of an unidentified individual, presumed to be a member of the Myanmar military, along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in the Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Sunday.

The deceased, clad in a green helmet and uniform, was found in the Balukhali Customs area, with local residents promptly notifying the authorities.

Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station, Shamim Hossain, confirmed the recovery to the media.

According to Kaisar, a local youth who spoke to the media, the body bore black marks on the face, suggesting it might have drifted to Balukhali from Myanmar’s Dekhibunia via the Naf River.

Amid the escalating violence and gunfire, the Bangladesh Consulate in Rakhine’s capital, Sittwe, has made a temporary relocation to Yangon for safety reasons.

The Foreign Ministry disclosed that verbal instructions for the move have been issued, with the transition process currently underway.

This development comes as other foreign missions based in Sittwe also relocate to Yangon, citing security concerns.

Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, in a statement on Saturday, mentioned that efforts to repatriate Myanmar security personnel who sought refuge in Bangladesh are progressing, following dialogues between the two nations.

Furthermore, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has declared a state of high alert, affirming its stance against permitting any Rohingya refugees to cross into Bangladesh.

The BGB is closely monitoring the evolving situation along the border, ready to implement necessary actions as required.

“We have observed incidents of firing at various points along the border. Although the frequency of shelling has decreased compared to the initial days.
