Farming groundnut thrives in 5 dists of Rangpur region

Five districts of Rangpur region — Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari — have witnessed an increase in groundnut cultivation. In this season, groundnut has been cultivated on 5 thousand 512 hectares of land in the region. Approximately about 12 thousand 558 metric tons of groundnut will be produced from the districts of this region.
According to the information of the Directorate of Agricultural Extension, Rangpur, the highest groundnut cultivation in the region this season is in Kurigram district. A large amount of groundnut has been cultivated in Brahmaputra and Teesta pastures of this district. In Kurigram district, groundnut has been cultivated in a total of 2 thousand 850 hectares of land this season. Groundnut cultivation has also increased in Gaibandha district this season. Groundnut has been cultivated on a total of 1 thousand 925 hectares in more than 150 pastures of 28 unions surrounded by Teesta, Brahmaputra and Yamuna rivers in Gaibandha district. Apart from this, groundnut has been cultivated on 220 hectares in Rangpur district, 462 hectares in Lalmonirhat district and 55 hectares in Nilphamari district. If the weather is favorable, it is expected that 12 thousand 558 metric tons of groundnut will be produced from the five districts of Rangpur region this year. Bangladesh Atomic Research Institutes (BINA) Rangpur officer in charge agriculturist Dr. Mohammad Ali said that four and a half tons of seeds have been given to about 100 farmers in Rangpur, Gaibandha, and Panchagarh districts especially in the Char area of Rangpur.
He said that those farmers have been distributed financially in the exhibition. Bina has also provided training to all those farmers. A record amount of groundnuts have been cultivated this year due to favorable weather conditions.
The yield has also been good. He hopes that the farmers will also get good prices. He also said that peanuts have more nutritional value and benefits than many other foods in the diet. Peanuts reduce weight, regulate blood pressure, improve memory and regulate blood sugar.
