Is Prof Yunus above law? Says AL
Staff Reporter :
None above the law and there is no opportunity to go scot-free after committing a crime irrespective of their social position, including Nobel laureate Professor Yunus, General Secretary of Awami League (AL) Obaidul Quader said.
Throwing a question the AL General Secretary said, “Is Muhammad Yunus above the law or not? He was sentenced by a court and his party has no responsibility in this regard.”
Earlier on Monday, a Dhaka Labour court sentenced Professor Muhammad Yunus and three top officials of Grameen Telecom to six months’ jail, with fine of Tk 25,000 each, in a case over violation of labour law.
“The workers who have been deprived of their dues have filed the case.
Why is the Awami League government being criticized here? I just want to say, are you, your status, your position, your personality above the law? Is Dr Md Yunus above the law and court?”
Obaidul Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister said while replying to a query during a press conference at the Awami League President’s political office in Dhanmondi on Tuesday.
The AL General Secretary said that the forthcoming election will be participatory but BNP and its allies are opposing the election unilaterally.
Terming the main opposition BNP’s leaflet distribution programme a ‘mysterious’, Obaidul Quader said “No matter how much they obstruct the election and the election cannot be stopped.”
He also said, “Suddenly they [BNP] may turn towards assassinations, and sneak attacks. That is what they are preparing for.
Now we are getting information that even if silence is shown by distribution of leaflets, they will take up arms.”
