Child drowning awareness meet held

A pivotal courtyard meeting was convened at Satghoria Union in Sandwip recently, spearheaded by Prof Dr. Edris Alam, the Chief Executive of the Disaster and Development Organization (DADO). This gathering marked the launch of a comprehensive campaign aimed at raising awareness about child drowning, a pressing issue in the region.
DADO, under the leadership of Professor Alam, has been actively engaged in a series of drowning prevention initiatives across Sandwip. These efforts include public awareness campaigns, distribution of educational leaflets, organizing seminars, as well as offering swimming and CPR training programs. The inaugural courtyard meeting at Sandwip, hosted by DADO, served as a critical platform for this endeavor.
During the event, Professor Dr. Edris Alam highlighted a startling statistic: annually, over 15,000 children lose their lives to drowning in Bangladesh. This meeting saw an encouraging turnout, with 50 women and over 20 children in attendance, underscoring the community’s interest in addressing this grave issue.
Prof Alam expressed concern over the lack of awareness and insufficient supervision of children, identifying these factors as the primary causes of the high incidence of child drowning in Bangladesh. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, he called for concerted efforts to make substantial strides in child drowning prevention.
