‘Elections meaningless without competition’
UNB :
Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana has emphasized the need for competition in elections, saying they are meaningless without rival candidates.
She made the remark at a meeting with candidates from the five constituencies in Gaibandha at the deputy commissioner’s conference room on Wednesday.
The election commissioner said another big factor is voter turnout.
Rashida Sultana said the Election Commission is prepared to a hold fair, peaceful and acceptable election, but it cannot do it alone-everyone concerned has a job to do.
Candidates should encourage voters and bring them to the polling centres, she added.
Addressing journalists, she said they play a critical role in the electoral process.
“It is your responsibility to draw attention to the transparency or lack thereof of voting.”
