Bangladesh to attend UNPMM meet in Ghana on Dec 5-6

Staff Reporter  :
Bangladesh is going to attend the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting (UNPMM) to be held in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on December 5-6.

During the meeting, the Bangladesh delegation led by Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen will emphasise the importance of communication skills in ensuring the security and safety of peacekeepers, particularly in facing security risks.

Mohammad Rafiqul Alam, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said this during the weekly press briefing at the Ministry on Monday.

“They will also focus on the mental well-being of peacekeepers, increasing the participation of women in peacekeeping operations, and addressing the security concerns of non-combatant civilians,” he said.

Additionally, the Foreign Minister will engage in several bilateral meetings and various side events during the conference.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial serves as a crucial platform for Member States to collaboratively enhance the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations and their positive impact on the communities they serve, according to the UN.

This current event represents the latest in a series of meetings held at the Head of State, Government, or Ministerial level since 2014, including the one in Seoul in 2021.

Discussions during the event will concentrate on implementing tangible measures to enhance operations in alignment with the ongoing reform efforts through Action for Peacekeeping (A4P), A4P+, and the Digital Transformation Strategy.

Building on previous dialogues and considering the rapidly changing operational landscapes, Member States will deliberate on issues such as generating high-performing and specialised capabilities, making commitments to meet UN needs, and establishing new or expanded sustainable capacity-building, training, and equipping partnerships in critical areas.

Peacekeeping stands as a potent illustration of multilateral cooperation. All Member States represented in the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations have received invitations to participate in this significant event.

Apart from this, Mohammad Rafiqul Alam, also highlighted on the repatriation of the Rohingya people, saying that a tri-partite initiative among Bangladesh, Myanmar and China is going on for the safe, dignified, sustainable and voluntary repatriation.

“Bangladesh has been closely monitoring the current situation in Myanmar.

It is expected that the repatriation will commence as soon as the situation develops in Rakhine state,” he said.

He further said that efforts are on to inform the Rohingyas about the benefits they would obtain after the repatriation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens.
