12th JS polls: EC orders to transfer UNOs, OCs

The Election Commission on Friday asked the public administration ministry to transfer all Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) in phases.

The EC directives come hours after it asked the home ministry to transfer all officers-in-charge (OCs) of police stations.

In the first phase, it asked to transfer all UNOs who have been working in their respective upazilas for more than a year.

A letter has been sent to the senior secretary to the ministry in this regard yesterday, EC sources said.

Earlier, the EC asked the Home Ministry to transfer all officers-in-charge discharging duties at their respective police stations for over six months, in an effort to ensure fair voting in the forthcoming 12th parliamentary elections.

A letter signed by Deputy Secretary MizanurRahman of the commission was sent to the Senior Secretary of the Public Security Division of the ministry on Thursday in this regard.

The Election Commission has decided to transfer the officers-in-charge (OCs) of all the police stations in order to conduct the upcoming election smoothly, reads the letter.

“For this purpose, in the first stage, the transfer proposal of the OCs who have completed more than six months of service at their current workplace to another district or elsewhere, should be sent to the Election Commission by December 5.”

There are over 600 police stations in 64 districts. The deadline for submission of nomination papers in the 12th parliamentary elections expired on Thursday The nomination papers will be scrutinized on December 1-4, and then the candidatures can be withdrawn by December 17.

The 12th Parliamentary Election will be held on January 7 (Sunday) as per the polls schedule announced by Chief Election Commissioner KaziHabibulAwal on November 15.
