‘Comments on BD by other countries unwarranted’

In response to the recent counter-position between the United States and Russia in the matters of interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen has said that the involvement of any third or fourth countries in such matters is deemed ‘undesirable.’

The foreign secretary made the assertion while replying to queries from journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs upon his return to Bangladesh on Sunday after concluding a high-level meeting in New Delhi.

Recently Russian Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the United States was meddling in the internal political processes in Bangladesh.

Reacting to such a comment, the US on Saturday said that the Russian Foreign Ministry has deliberately ‘mischaracterised’ the US foreign policy and their Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas.

“I don’t want to make any comment about it. Only we can talk about what is happening here. What the third or fourth countries are talking about is deemed undesirable. We don’t want to discuss it,” Masud Bin Momen said.

In reply to another query, he remarked, “In the past, we observed that China also commented on similar issues. However, we did not seek opinions from anyone.”

During a weekly briefing on November 22, the Russian Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said “We have spoken repeatedly about the attempts by the United States and its allies to influence internal political processes in Bangladesh, ostensibly under the banner of ensuring “transparency and inclusiveness” in the upcoming parliamentary elections there.
