JnU student Khadija freed from jail in DSA case
Court Correspondent :
Jagannath University (JnU) student Khadijatul Kubra has been freed from jail on bail in two separate cases filed under the Digital Security Act.
She walked out of Women’s Central Jail at Kashimpur in Gazipur around 9 am on Monday after the bail order reached the jail authorities.
Md Shahjahan Miah, Senior Super (Acting) of the jail, said the bail order reached the jail authorities on Sunday evening. She was released from jail after scrutinizing the bail order. Khadija’s sister received her at the jail gate.
Earlier on November 16, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that granted bail to Khadija in the cases, paving the way of her release from the jail.
In 2020, the police sued Khadija and Major (retired) Delwar Hossain in Kalabagan and New Market Police Stations in the capital under the DSA, on allegations of spreading anti-government statements and tarnishing the country’s image.
Later, the police investigated the two cases and pressed charges against Khadija and Delwar in May last year.
The Cyber Tribunal of Dhaka took the charges in cognizance and issued arrest warrants against the two accused. Khadija was arrested from her home in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on August 27 of last year.
Khadija’s bail was rejected two times by the trial court.
Later, the High Court Division granted her bail in February this year.
However, in view of the state’s appeal, the Chamber Judge suspended the bail order given by the High Court and sent it to the Appellate Division for decision.
