15 vehicles torched, vandalised across country

At least 15 vehicles, including 10 passengers’ buses, were set on fire on Sunday, the first day of the 48-hour countrywide hartal called to protest the announcement of the national polls schedule by the Election Commission on November 15.

In Gazipur, miscreants set fire to a long-distance passenger bus standing in Paler Mat area of Gazipur metropolis city.

The bus driver and owner Delwar Hossain lost consciousness after losing his only source of income in the fire.

Later, the locals took him to a nearby hospital and provided first aid.

The incident happened on Sunday at noon. Locals extinguished the fire before the police reached the spot.

In Rajshahi, unidentified people set a bus on fire in Rajshahi’s Godagari around 5:30pm on Sunday.

Godagari Circle ASP Sohel Rana said, some men in motorcycles stopped the bus by throwing bricks and breaking its windows.

They later torched the bus and fled the scene. There were no reports of casualties.

In Natore, unidentified miscreants set fire to a parked passenger bus in Bhavaniganj area of the town around 3.00am on Sunday.

Quoting locals, Nasim Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar Police Station said some unidentified men went to the spot riding on motorcycles and set the ‘Mukti Sona’ paribahan bus on fire pouring petrol.

Being informed, police and firefighters brought the fire under control, he added.

In Netrokona, a group of miscreants stopped a duck-laden pickup van at around 10pm on the Chirang road while it was heading towards Kendua from Barhatta upazila and set fire on it.

In Lakshmipur, miscreants vandalized two buses of Shatabdi and Shyamoli transport in North Temuhani area of the district.

However, before the police arrived, the strike supporters quickly left the place.

In Jamalpur, hartal supporters vandalised a journalist’s bike in Jamalpur’s Sarishabari upazila.

The incident took place yesterday around 9:00am in Bagarpar area of the upazila.

In Bogra, miscreants set fire to a truck standing in the Ghoradhap Bandar area of Nungola Union of Bogura early Sunday. Later local people came and doused the fire by sprinkling water.

In Chattogram, a bus and a mini truck were set ablaze in Chandgaon area of Chattogram early on Saturday night. Police claimed the two vehicles were burnt due to a technical glitch.
