64 buses torched in Dhaka since Oct 28: DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Friday said a total of 64 buses were set on fire in the capital from October 28 to November 9.

The police said also that 64 cases have been filed with different police stations in connection with the arson attacks so far.

DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime and Operations) Khandaker Mahid Uddin revealed the report at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre.

The DMP official said that these seditious activities were carried out centring political programs.

The police said 12 people were caught red-handed while setting fire
to the vehicles and some of them got on the buses as passengers.

Petrol, gunpowder, matches, cotton, old clothes, among other items were seized from them, the police official said.

A miscreant died while setting a fire and escaping in Mohammadpur, the DMP official added.

“On October 29, a youth named Nayem, 22, died in a fire set by arsonists while another youth named Rabiul Islam, 25, was burnt. Both were helpers of the ‘Asim Paribahan’ bus,” the Additional Commissioner said.

He warned that police will take legal action in case of vandalizm, arson, burning someone in the name of political program.

“No one should engage in any destructive activities in the name of a political movement centring the blockade,” he said.
