October road mishaps claim 437 lives

A total of 437 people were killed in 429 road accidents across the country in October this year, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passenger welfare organisation, revealed the fact in a report on Friday.

The report said another 681 people were injured in the accidents.

Jatri Kalyan Samity collected data from the country’s national and regional dailies and online news portals during the period to prepare the report.

It said that 53 people died in 29 railway accidents, while 12 died and two were injured in six waterway accidents.

As per the report, a total of 502 people were killed and 838 others injured in 468 accidents on roads, waterways and railways across the country.

Of the casualties, 144 were killed in 131 motorbike accidents, which account for 30.53 per cent of total accidents. Besides, 76 people were injured in motorbike accidents.

In last month, Dhaka division recorded the highest number of road accidents with 134 incidents resulting in 141 fatalities and 132 injuries, while Barisal division logged the lowest figure of 24 accidents.

Among those killed in road accidents in October, 120 were drivers, 36 pedestrians, 28 transport workers, 52 students, four members of law enforcement agencies, 68 women and 30 children.

The report further said 36.13 per cent of the accidents occurred on national highways, 22.14 per cent on regional highways and 30.76 per cent on feeder roads.
