There is no end to BCL’s unlawful acts
Recently some BCL activists were reportedly arrested for their alleged involvement in an incident of mugging Tk 33 lakh from a person who was going to a bank with the amount in Old Dhaka.
As the person cried with protest, people around the scene came to his rescue, but the BCL activists quickly started beating the person tagging him as a BNP-Jamaat activist and shouted the slogan “Joy Bangla”.
The people who came to his rescue soon left him and the BCL goons were able to snatch the money.
Later, the police through CCTV footage identified the BCL activists and arrested three of them recovering the part of the money they had snatched.
This is a unique case when some members of the student wing of the ruling Awami League exploited popular political slogan and identification of the opposition to give their mugging act a political cover.
But who would stop these goons? It is futile to ask this government to rein in them as it is using the BCL activists as musclemen to remain in power.
Still, the government has allowed the politics of Bangladesh to come to such a degraded state when one can beat an opposition activist with impunity.
The nation is used to seeing how the members of BCL as well as Jubo League pound upon opposition activists not just on the campuses but also outside.
Whenever protest processions are organised, they appear with their much known ‘helmets’ on their heads to attack the precisionists however peaceful they are.
These people with helmets also appeared during BNP’s rally in the capital on October 28 and fought against BNP supporters along with police.
These goons give service to the ruling party government and in return they extort money from people wherever that is possible, not to mention that they invariably receive tenders for works on the campuses.
For these so-called students who barely bother to become educated individuals, doing BCL is a source of income.
Quite often, news appears in the mainstream media that BCL leaders are caught when they try to mug people. People are not surprised with this news. These so-called student politicians have created a reign of terror everywhere.
The ruling party is using these students as its muscle power and it is really naïve for many to suggest that the government will control them since the government itself is benefitted by their role however unlawful it is.
Though in the recent incident of mugging police arrested several BCL activists, the police usually do not take any action against them.
