The importance of Friday prayer and Durood
Jum’a is an auspicious day for Muslims. This day is called the weekly Eid in the hadith. There is a unique Surah in the Holy Quran called ‘Al Jum’a’. There are some special practices for believers on Friday in the hadith. One of these is reading Durood.
Reciting blessings upon the beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a virtuous act of worship and reward. He himself has highlighted it in several narrations of hadith such as:
1. Hazrat Aws Ibn Aws Radiyallahu Anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah, (May God bless him and grant him peace) said, “The best of your days is Friday.” So on that day, you pray more and more on me, because your blessings are presented to me.
The people (the Companions present) said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! You will perish (after death). In that case, how will our blessings be presented to you?
He said, ‘Allah has forbidden the bodies of the Prophets to be eaten on the ground.’
2. Hazrat Ibn Mas’ud Radiyallahu Anhu narrates, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ‘On the Day of Resurrection that person will be closer to me than all people who among them will bless me the most.’ (Tirmidhi)
3. Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Amr Radiyallahu Anhuma narrates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (May God bless him and grant him peace) say, ‘Whoever recites Durood upon me once, Allah will recite Durood (mercy) upon him ten times.”(Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, Abu Dawud, Musnad Ahmad)
4. Hazrat Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu also narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Do not turn my grave into a festival center (as the grave worshipers hold fairs of Urs, etc.).” You offer blessings on me. Because, wherever you are, your prayers reach me (Abu Dawud, Musnad Ahmad).
5. Hazrat Ali Radiyallahu Anhu narrates, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ‘The real miser is that person; To whom I was mentioned, that is, my name was mentioned, but he did not recite durood on me.’ (Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad).
