A Dhaka court yesterday placed BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal on a five-day remand in a case on sabotage and attempts to snatch away pistols from the law enforcers during clashes on October 28 in the capital.

Lieutenant General (retired) Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy was placed on an eight-day remand in a case filed for alleged breach of trust by pretending to be someone else.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin of Dhaka CMM Court granted the remand rejecting his bail petition.

After hearing both sides, the court granted the remand, said Shah Alam, Sub-Inspector of Shahjahanpur Police Station’s General Registration section in the CMM Court.

Forty-nine BNP men were identified as suspects while 700-800 unidentified people have been made accused in the case.

Police and the BNP supporters clashed in some parts of the capital in connection with the party’s scheduled grand rally on October 28.

However, Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order, hearing the prosecution and defense lawyers.
Additional Public Prosecutor Tapos Kumar Pal of the court told media of the remand order.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal from a house in Shahidbagh area on Tuesday.

Later, after interrogation in DB office Alal was shown arrested and sent to the court with remand plea.

Additionally, Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order on Wednesday after police produced Hasan Sarwardy in the court, seeking a 10-day remand.

Mia Zahidul Islam Arefi, so-called advisor to US President Joe Biden and BNP leader Ishraque Hossain were made accused in the case.

Mia Arefi was arrested on Monday (October 30) in the case and sent to the jail while Hasan Sarwardy was detained on Tuesday.

The case docket says that Mia Zahidul Islam Arefi introduced himself as an advisor to US President Joe Biden to the media in presence of Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy and BNP leader Ishraque Hossain at BNP’s Nayapaltan Central Office on October 28 after the party had to suspend its grand rally on the day.

Mian Arefi told the media that he made a recommendation to his government to impose a ban on Bangladesh Police, Home Ministry and Law and Justice Division.

The complainant alleged Hasan Sarwardy and Ishraque helped him give the false statement and they instigated BNP leaders and activists to deteriorate the law and order situation supporting his statement.
