The main opposition party-BNP on Sunday announced nationwide blockades for three days starting Tuesday to press home their one-point demand of immediate resignation of the Awami League government.

After observing nationwide dawn to dusk strike, BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the fresh programme while speaking at a virtual press conference at the evening on Sunday.

“In order to protect the livelihood of the people who are affected by the ongoing rise in commodity prices due to ongoing injustice, mismanagement, unlimited corruption, lawlessness, money laundering and syndicates, the attack on the October 28 grand rally, killing of leaders and workers, arresting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP will hold this programme for the next three days,” Rizvi said.

He said that this program will be held by blocking roads and waterways.

Earlier on Sunday the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from his house in Gulshan in the capital.

The AL, BNP and Jamaat took to the streets on Saturday, after convening their previously announced rallies as their show downs.

But the BNP postponed its rally at Nayapaltan around 2:15pm as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and teargas shells which forced the party’s leaders and activists to leave the venue.

The party called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk strike for Sunday to protest the police action on the gathering.

Regarding the clashes of the grand rally, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Sunday that cases were being filed against BNP men for the killing of a policeman, snatching police’s weapons, attack on the chief justices residence, police hospital, and many other places.
