US reiterates stance on free, fair, peaceful polls in Bangladesh

US Under Secretary Uzra Zeya has reiterated her government’s stance to hold a free, fair and peaceful election.
She also reaffirmed that US does not support any particular political party instead is keen to see the continuation of democracy in Bangladesh.
Uzra Zeya said this to Prime Minister’s Adviser for Private Industry and Investment Salman F Rahman at a meeting at the US Department of State in Washington DC held on Friday.
Bangladesh Embassy in Washington in a press release said that they discussed a wide range of bilateral issues including further enhancing the existing excellent economic partnership between Bangladesh and the USA.
Adviser Rahman and Under Secretary Zeya also discussed recent conflicts in the Middle East, Rohingya issue and Bangladesh’s election, it said.

Three major political parties including the ruling Awami League, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami staged rallies in the capital today.
The programmes were marred by clashes between the members of the political parties and law enforcement agencies including the police, leaving at least two people dead.
At least 130 people received treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being injured in today’s clashes, according to DMCH Director Brig Gen Nazmul Haque. Several vehicles were torched during the clashes.
