ICC Men's Cricket World Cup: Tigers lose to SA despite Riyad’s ton

Bangladesh suffered a massive 149-run defeat to South Africa (SA) in their fifth match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

South Africa bagged eight points from five matches, while Bangladesh remained with two points playing as many outings.

Electing to bat first, South Africa piled up a mammoth total of 282 for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 50 overs and then all out Bangladesh for 233 runs off 46.4 overs.

Mahmudullah Riyad fought back alone scoring a run-a-ball 101. He hit 11 fours and four sixes. Riyad was caught at the long-off by Marco Jansen off Gerald Coetzee when Bangladesh’s score was 227 for the loss of nine wickets.

Riyad and Nasum Ahmed made a remarkable  partnership contributing together 41 runs in the seventh wicket partnership before Nasum Ahmed (19) was caught & bowled by Gerald Coetzee when Bangladesh’s score was 122 for the loss of seven wickets.

Riyad and Hasan Mahmud built another notable partnership scoring together 37 runs for the eight-wicket stand before Hasan Mahmud (15) was caught at the mid-off by Coetzee off Kagiso Rabada when the Tigers’ total was 159 for the loss of eight wickets.

Coetzee captured three wickets in the space of 62 runs, while Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada and Coetze claimed two wickets each for 39, 42 and 56 runs respectively.

Earlier, South Africa had a poor start with two openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks put on together 33 runs in the opening stand before Reeza Hendricks (12) was bowled out by left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam.
After Reeza’s dismissal, one-down Rassie van der Dussen (1) was trapped leg before wicket by spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz when the Proteas’ score was 36 for the loss of two wickets.

After Dussen’s departure, Quinton and second-down Aiden Markram mended the innings adding together 131 runs for the third-wicket partnership before Markram was caught at the long-off by Litton Das off Shakib Al Hasan when South Africa’s total was 167 for the loss of three wickets.

Markram hit a polished 60. His 69-ball innings was laced with seven fours.
After Markram’s dismissal, Quinton and third-down Heinrich Klaasen added together 142 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Quinton was caught at the deep backward point by Nasum Ahmed off right-arm pacer Hasan Mahmud when South Africa’s score was 309 for the loss of four wickets.

Quinton struck a master class 174 runs. He hit 15 fours and seven sixers in his 140-ball knock. It was Quinton’s third century in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. He was adjudged the Man of the Match.

After Quinton’s departure, Heinrich and fourth-down David Miller built another notable partnership. They scored together 65 runs in the five-wicket stand before Heinrich was caught at the deep midwicket by Mahmudullah Riyad off Hasan Mahmud when the African’s total was 374 for the loss of five wickets.
