If not resign on time, govt won’t find way to escape: BNP
Staff Reporter :
The main opposition party-BNP-on Sunday asked the government to step down soon or face a dire situation in which it would not find way to escape.
“The government has created a horrifying situation in the country.
Law and order situation in the country has deteriorated. The government will not get a way to escape, without stepping down,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while briefing journalists at the party’s Nayapaltan office in the capital about their October 28 grand rally in Dhaka.
Earlier, the BNP Secretary General held a meeting with the party leaders to discuss the preparations for holding the grand rally peacefully.
Trashing the ruling party leaders’ comments and all speculations, Mirza Fakhrul said, “It’s completely false and propaganda against us. We didn’t ask our leaders and workers to come to Dhaka and sit on the streets.
Rather, we told them after the programme on October 28, everyone would have to go back to their respective places and wait for the next programme.”
The BNP leader said, “We thought that they would accept the demands of the people and organise polls under a non-partisan neutral government. But instead, they are oppressing the people. Extreme inflation of food prices and lack of work and employment created a horrific situation in the country.”
Mirza Fakhrul said police unusually threatened them about the October 28 grand rally.
The BNP leader said, “It is most shocking thing that the officials of the law enforcement agencies are threatening to tackle with iron hands if anything happens.
If so, then you must take action against those who are filing false cases unlawfully and file cases against the ruling party as the prime minister herself issued threats yesterday (Saturday) and Obaidul Quader did it before saying the oppositions’ hands will be broken.”
He said, “You (Police administration) do not create any barrier to the opposition’s peaceful movement demanding a free, fair and credible election. If you do that, it will be considered as taking a position against free and fair polls.”
Referring to ruling Awami League’s General Secretary, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Obaidul Quader’s statement shows their intention, they (police) attacked our office without any reason. We reiterate that the October 28 mass rally will be a peaceful one.”
