Minister supports buying high cost jeeps for DCs, UNOs

The procurement of new jeeps for deputy commissioners (DCs) and upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) was approved by the government as these officials are very necessary to ensure a free, fair and peaceful elections, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the cabinet committee on purchase approved the proposal to buy a total of 261 luxury jeeps for the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) at high cost for conducting the upcoming parliamentary elections. The price of the jeeps was fixed at Tk380 crore.

When asked government’s restrictions on buying cars, the Law Minister replied, “the government had imposed a ban to stop buying cars, but it was relaxed for the sake of the election.”

According to media reports, the law minister termed the purchases as very necessary in light of the upcoming national elections.
