‘Only advice, warning not enough to contain China’

Staff Reporter :
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen claimed that he told White House National Security Advisor to Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan that only advice and warning would not be enough to contain China.

“When Jack Sullivan met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Washington, I told him that only advice, warning would not be enough to contain China.

Bring some money also,” he said during a weekly press briefing at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

“He (Jake) told me that he has been trying to create a fund of $200 billion dollars for the developing countries.

He also wants to disburse $50 billion dollars to support the developing countries.

Then I said that if this happens we will look towards to you,” the Minister said.

Talking about the steps taken by the current Sri Lankan government to recover from bankruptcy, he said, “Strong leadership and pragmatic steps have helped Sri Lanka to recover from recession within a year. “

The Foreign Minister also said during his recent visit to Colombo, the Sri Lankan government told him that they would join the Regional Compre-hensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade bloc under the Chinese leadership.

They want development of their country.

“We have taken loans $ 4billion loan from China, which is one percent of our GDP.

But some people said that Bangladesh will fall into the trap of China.

The same narrative was also circulated about Sri Lanka,” Dr Momen said.
