36pc drivers suffer from hypertension

Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary A B M Amin Ullah Nuri said 36 per cent public and goods-carrying transport drivers are suffering from hypertension while 17 per cent from visual complications.

He made the comment in an inauguration programmee of the transport drivers’ health and eye checkup at free of cost in the capital Nikunja area’s Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) training centre on Wednesday.

The programme was jointly organized by the BRTA and Dhaka Ahsania Mission on the occasion of celebrating ‘National Road Safety Day’.

A B M Amin Ullah Nuri said the statistics were sorted out from a research survey conducted by Dhaka Ahsania Mission in last year.

In that research 600 drivers health checkup had done where seven per cent were detected with poor eyesight like cataract problems.

In the discussion meeting organized on the theme of ‘Walking on the road in accordance with the law, build a smart Bangladesh’ Road Transport and Highways Division secretary further said the possibility of road accident has increased several time as the drivers ply vehicles on road with health complexity.

Aware of drivers own health is the prime requirement to make a safe road, he added.

As a programme president BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder said the drivers of our country aren’t concerned about their health.

They ply vehicles on road having various health problems like visual complication which accelerate the road crashes.

With the help of Dhaka Ahsania Mission the health and eye checkup and training session on drug’s harmful effect on health programme have arrange aiming building aware to the drivers community, he added.

The ongoing programme will continue across the country by associated with Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Dhaka Ahsania Mission, Lions Club and Rotary Club, BRTA Chairman said.

He said, steps will be taken to provide free follow-up examination, spectacles and cataract surgery to drivers who are found to have eye problems from this program.

Vice President of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Professor Dr. Kazi Shariful Alam requested the drivers to cooperate in conducting the free health and check-up program and urged all the drivers to be conscious about their own health.
