No election, AL destroyed Constitution: BNP

Hundreds of BNP leaders and supporters participate in a women’s rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal in front of their party central office at Nayapaltan in the capital on Friday to press home one-point demand.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the government is repeatedly saying that they want to hold the next general election under the constitution that the ruling Awami League (AL) has already destroyed.

“The upcoming general election cannot be held under the existing constitution in any way.

Because, it is the AL government which has destroyed the national constitution by segregating it many times on their whims,” Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a women’s rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.

The rally was organised to press home BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s unconditional release, withdrawal of false cases against the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and forming an election-time non-party neutral government.

The BNP Secretary General criticised the ruling party leaders’ comments that the election would be held under the existing constitution, saying no polls can be held under this constitution, because the election will never be free, fair and impartial if this government remains in power.

The BNP leader said also, “If this government comes to power again, there will be no security of people, particularly, women and children.

We will lose our independence and sovereignty. Our democracy and right of franchise will disappear for forever.”

BNP Secretary General said the involvement of women in the ongoing movement to restore democracy is a historic milestone.

Addressing the women’s leaders, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Let’s build unity through the united efforts of men and women.

Through that unity, we will force the government to resign from power, dissolve parliament to pave the way for forming a neutral election-time government.

“None was secured in the hands of the government. Democracy is also not secured in their hands, particularly women and children don’t have any security in the country because of the Awami League government.”

He referred to the recent arrest of a woman BNP leader under the digital act for a Facebook post.

BNP Standing Committee Member Selima Rahman said, “The women have risen against this illegal government. They had sent their husbands and children to war to liberate the country.

However, after independence, it was discovered that these women were killed and raped.

Who did it? Those associated with Bakshal and members of the security forces.”

She said, “After coming to power, President Ziaur Rahman, ensured that women were employed in the police force and worked towards making women economically independent.”

Mohila Dal President Afroza Abbas presided over the programme, and General Secretary Sultana Ahmed moderated the event.

BNP Standing Committee Members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and central leaders of Mahila Dal were also present in the programme.
