NID would be under EC until gazette issued
Staff Reporter :
Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md Jahangir Alam has said the National Identity (NID) cards will remain under the jurisdiction of the commission until a gazette regarding the new law is issued.
“The Election Commission shall continue to carry out its activities until the new law takes effect.
In other words, until the home ministry completes all necessary preparations, including establishing offices and hiring manpower, and sets a date, the EC will oversee NID-related tasks,” said the EC secretary while talking to reporters at his office in Agargaon on Wednesday.
However, the Election Commission will be responsible for updating the voter list, he added.
On 4 September, the National Identity Registration Bill, 2023 was placed in Parliament to transfer the national identity registration operation from the Election Commission to the security services division of the home ministry.
