Road march to continue until govt quits: BNP

Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) hold a youth march in front of the local BNP office in Rangpur on Saturday in support of the party's one-point movement.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the leaders and activists of the BNP will remain on the streets until the the Awami League government quits.

“We have said loudly that the BNP men will remain on the streets, the road march would be continuing until they can bring down the Awami League government,” Mirza Fakhrul said while launching a youth march in front of the local BNP office in Rangpur city toward the neighbouring township of Dinajpur in support of the party’s one-point movement.

The BNP Secretary General said, “Our demand is clear, the people of the country no longer want to see Sheikh Hasina in power. They want her to step down and hold elections under a non-party neutral government soon.”

Addressing the Prime Minister, the BNP leader said, “Sheikh Hasina, if you do not resign immediately, if you do not handover power to a non-party government, your government will be swept away by the wave of millions of people that has been created across the country.

You could not stop that.”

“Rangpur’s farmers’ leader Nuruldin called people to stand up against injustice during the British rule.

Now youths are calling upon the people the country from Rangpur to put up strong resistance against the current dictatorship, fascism and looters,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

“Thousands of people were joining the BNP’s programmes and the government would be swept away by the collective will of the people, paving the way for a people’s government,” he said.

“In addition to the BNP, the government will be established in collaboration with all participating political parties,” he said.

The BNP leader said the parties will aim to eradicate corruption and exploitation from the country through a 31-point movement.

The BNP leader said that the government is not allowing BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to seek medical treatment abroad, even knowing that her treatment is not possible in Bangladesh.

“The government is not letting Tarique Rahman return to Bangladesh by filing false cases against him,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

BNP affiliates Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal and Sechchwa Sebak Dal as well as its metropolitan units organised the youth marches in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.

The marches aimed to press home the party’s one-point demand and the restoration of voting rights of the youth. Besides, the BNP is set to unveil a series of simultaneous programs on September 18.

The programs are part of the party’s movement aimed to compel the AL government to resign and pave the way to hold the next polls under a neutral caretaker government.

The youth road march programme was attended by top leaders of BNP’s three associate bodies including Jubo Dal President Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Acting General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Milton, Sechhchha Sebak Dal President SM Jilani, General Secretary Rajeev Ahsan, Chhatra Dal Acting President Rashed Iqbal Khan, and General Secretary Saif Mahmud Jewel.
