Staff Reporter  :
The number of dengue fatalities in the country has crossed 800 with 14 fresh deaths from the mosquito borne diseaes in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning, the data of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), showed.

It said the fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh rose to 804 this year.

In the last 24 hours, 2,598 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever, the DGHS data said.

Among the new patients, 881 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside the capital – indicating a worsening situation across the country, DGHS said.

A total of 10,330 dengue patients, including 4,208 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
So far, the DGHS has recorded 164,562 dengue cases, 153,428 recoveries this year.

This month, the Aedes mosquito-borne Dengue has claimed the lives of 211 people across the country.

A total of 40,754 cases were also reported during the same period, DGHS added.

Meanwhile public health experts said, the prevalence of dengue cases in Bangladesh has increased ten times since last year and the deaths has increased almost thrice.

“The positive cases of the vector borne fever have increased 10 times and death three times between mid September, 2022 and mid-September, 2023,” Professor Dr. Md Golam Sarower, Head, Department of Entomology, National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSM) said on Thursday at a seminar.

Asiatic Society of Bangladesh organized the seminar titled “Challenges in Controlling Aedes Mosquitoes to Prevent Dengue in Bangladesh.”

Meanwhile, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) urged rapid action as dengue cases in Bangladesh are on rise sharply.

“The higher incidence of dengue is taking place in the context of an unusual episodic amount of rainfall, combined with high temperatures and high humidity, which have resulted in an increased mosquito population throughout the country,” WHO said.
