AL govt must be defeated at any cost: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies hold mass processions in the capital on Saturday as part of their one-point simultaneous movement to force the government to resign.

The main opposition party BNP on Saturday vowed to defeate the Awami League government at any cost.
“This fascist Awami League government must be defeated at any cost.

We have to restore democracy in the country and return people’s right here,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it while addressing a rally in the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city following mass processions organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units of the BNP.

The processions are held as part of the party’s one-point movement demanding the resignation of the government.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “Obaidul Quader (AL General Secretary) said that there will be a possibility of conducting attacks on the religious minorities.

It is AL which attacks the minorities and shifts the blame on the the opposition parties.”

The BNP Secretary General asked the party men to be alert on this issue.

He thanked party men for making the programme successful even drenching in the rain.

“You are drenching in the rain water.

You have to go through such more pains to oust the anti people government,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas said in the programme that the BNP is promoting a peaceful program to bring down the government without violence.

“If the government hinders this peaceful agenda we will not remain silent,” he said.

“If the AL government remains in power anymore, this country will lose its independence and sovereignty,” Mirza Abbas said.

The senior BNP leader claimed that the government is attempting to retain power by targeting, abducting, and killing BNP leaders and activists.

BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, “There is a plot against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s life.”

He demanded immediate release of Khaleda Zia.

“We all have to be united and take to the field then no force on the earth can halt our progress. Hence, it is vital to mobilize and demonstrate on the streets,” Gayeshwar Roy said.

BNP Standing Committee Member Selima Rahman said that the government is turning to foreigners to stay in power.

Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, “We must continue our movement until this struggle reaches its conclusion.”

BNP Dhaka Metropolitan North convener Amanullah Aman demanded that BNP chief Khaleda Zia should be given the opportunity to seek better treatment abroad.

“Otherwise, the government will be held responsible if her condition worsens,” he said.

BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, Mohammad Shahjahan, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Sayed Moazzem Hossain Alal and BNP Metropolitan South convener Abdus Salam were present at the event.

The BNP started the mass processions at around 3:50pm on Saturday, with leaders and activists of the party joining the event holding banners.

Dhaka North BNP started its procession at Rampura’s Better Life Hospital after 3pm.

Meanwhile, Dhaka South BNP started its procession after 2:30 from Kamalapur, which passed Pir Jangi Shah Mazar, Arambagh and Fakirapool intersection.
